The NYC Benchmarking Law requires owners of large buildings to annually measure their energy and water consumption
and submit the data using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®. Some of the key components of the regulation are:
The annual deadline is May 1st for previous year’s energy and water usage.
Owners must request tenant utility data for the previous calendar
year each January.
Owners of buildings that are larger than 25,000 sq ft are required to benchmark.
Penalties can include a $500 fine for missing the May 1st benchmarking deadline and additional $500 fines for each
subsequent quarter, up to a maximum of $2,000.
